The Zentangle Method — Getting Started

You have decided that you would like to try The Zentangle Method. So, you have your pens, a pencil, a shading stump, and your paper. What do you do next? I suggest that you consider at least one lesson from a Certified Zentangle Teacher ( a CZT).

A CZT will help you cut through all the  “I can do that. I don’t need any help” nonsense that is on the internet about Zentangle drawing. You will learn why Zentangle is NOT “doodling”. You will learn why Zentangle Art is NOT adult coloring book art. Most importantly you will have fun, you will meet new friends, and you will learn a skill that will give you hours of enjoyment.

There are 100’s of Zentangle patterns. We call these patterns tangles. One of the best websites for finding Zentangle patterns is Tangle Patterns.com . The tangle patterns are listed alphabetically and the step-outs are easily followed.  It is helpful to create your own copy of each tangle step-out.  You can do this by following the step-out on the website. There are examples of the patterns and there are articles to help often by the original creator of the tangle.

There is an official Zentangle website, Zentangle.com . There are many resources on Zentangle.com including a store where you can purchase everything Zentangle. There is also a list of all Certified Zentangle Teachers (CZT) with their contact information. You can search the CZT list by state. There are tutorials that are perfect to get a beginner Zentangle enthusiast started.

The Zentangle Method is not just being able to draw the patterns. It is also about slowing down and focusing on the process.  Zentangle Art is a by-product of The Zentangle Method. Because the Zentangle is simple and easy to learn, there are those who will try to sell their services who have not gone through the process of learning the method themselves. You might think “What difference does it make?” That’s easy. Would you rather learn from someone who took the time to invest in learning from the real creators of The Zentangle Method or would you be willing to settle for a cheap imitation?  Just be cautious, and be sure you are being guided by a REAL Zentangle Teacher.

There are 8 steps of Zentangle. They are;

  1. Step 01 – Gratitude and Appreciation. …
  2. Step 02 – Corner Dots. …
  3. Step 03 – Border. …
  4. Step 04 – String. …
  5. Step 05 – Tangle. …
  6. Step 06 – Shade. …
  7. Step 07 – Initial and Sign. …
  8. Step 08 – Appreciate.

I will discuss each of the steps in another post. For now, it is important that I mention them. If you carefully follow the Zentangle Steps you will get the most from your tangling experience. Remember, Zentangle is a meditative art technique, so, SLOW DOWN, breathe, focus on what you are doing. If all you do is reproduce the tangles, you will not experience the true intent of the Zentangle Method.
