Zentangle and Bible Art Journaling

Bible Art Journaling is one of my favorite ways to combine the Zentangle Method with other art forms. The narrow 2″ margin in a journaling Bible is perfect for one or two Zentangle patterns. The results are very pleasing and the repetitive patterns illuminate the scripture beautifully. Bible Art Journaling is a very personal way to express worship. It helps to make the scripture unforgettable. Zentangle helps to plant a beautiful image in my mind along with the scripture which makes it easier for me to recall.

There are 8 steps in creating Zentangle.  The steps not only guide the artist in creating a true Zentangle piece but also aid in the meditation process that is so beneficial in the Zentangle method:

  1. Step 01 – Gratitude and Appreciation.

  2. Step 02 – Corner Dots. …

  3. Step 03 – Border. …

  4. Step 04 – String. …

  5. Step 05 – Tangle. …

  6. Step 06 – Shade. …

  7. Step 07 – Initial and Sign. …

  8. Step 08 – Appreciate.

There is a scripture that I use to describe my process for Bible Art Journaling that has steps that are similar to the steps for Zentangle:

Finally, brethren,

  1. whatsoever things are true,
  2. whatsoever things are honest,
  3. whatsoever things are just,
  4. whatsoever things are pure,
  5. whatsoever things are lovely,
  6. whatsoever things are of good report;
  7. if there be any virtue,
  8. and if there be any praise, think on these things.  Philippians 4:8

By following the guidelines of this verse the artist is also guided to meditate and thus create a piece of art that not only benefits his artist’s process but also leads him to a greater appreciation of the words that are speaking to his soul.

The meditative similarities between the Zentangle Method and Bible Art Journaling make for a natural combination of the two methods. The result is not only beneficial to the artist but also beautiful.
